JPG to PNG vs PNG to JPG: Which Format Should You Use?

A clear comparison of JPG and PNG so you can choose the right image format for photos, logos, screenshots, and web pages.

Use JPG for photos

JPG is usually the right choice for photos because it keeps file sizes small while preserving good visual quality. It is easy to share and works almost everywhere.

The tradeoff is that JPG uses lossy compression. If you keep editing and saving the same JPG, quality can slowly drop.

Use PNG for sharp graphics

PNG is better for screenshots, logos, icons, text-heavy images, and graphics that need clean edges. It also supports transparent backgrounds.

PNG files can be larger than JPG files, especially for photos, but they are excellent when clarity matters more than size.

Convert based on the final use

If you need smaller photo files, convert PNG to JPG. If you need cleaner graphics or transparency, convert JPG to PNG.
